How do I enter multiple charges of mixed case types and maintain the appropriate overall case type in JIS?

JIS non-civil case filing screens (NCCA and VIO) do not allow a case to be filed with mixed case types of criminal and infraction, but they do allow charges of mixed types of criminal traffic and criminal non-traffic or criminal non-traffic and criminal felony. The resulting overall case type may affect further processing options in JIS that are based on case type such as FTAs, warrants, no-contact orders, time-pay, and collections.

When criminal felony (CF) and criminal non-traffic (CN) charges are included in the same case, the overall case type is determined based on which kind of charge was added first:

  • If criminal felony charge(s) are added first, the overall case type will be CF. If the felony charges are dismissed on PLS or deleted using PLSD, the overall case type remains CF. If the felony charges are amended to CN or CT charges, the overall case type will change to CN or CT.
  • If criminal non-traffic charges are added first, the overall case type will be CN. Adding felony charges on NCCA, NCC, VIO, dismissing charge on PLS, or deleting charges using PLSDÂ will have no effect on the overall case type - it remains as CN. If a CN charge is amended to a CT charge, the overall case type will change to CT.

For a chart that describes case types, refer to the JIS Online Manual, Overall Case Type Changes topic on the Add, Amend, or Delete Charges page.
